SPSU Game/Simulation Group

Our goals are:

To have fun!
We play and make games. We also create mathematical models that describe the "fun-ness" of existing games
To share areas of expertise and utilize the gaming lab at SPSU
This includes, but is not limited to combinatorics, game theory, graph theory, networks, algorithms, etc.
To increase awareness of the applications of computing
Demonstrate to non-majors how CS degrees (including the minor) could benefit them
To develop a network of students, alumni, and faculty with an emphasis on building community
Food and drinks bring people together
To provide an opportunity to work in an informal yet productive group and produce meaningful demos, projects, etc.
Part of our mission is to partner with schools and others to create educational materials for use in the classroom

We currently meet on Thursdays from noon-1:30pm in J-334.

Our inaugural meeting was held on 9-4-08. In an auspicious start, we discussed randomness and choice, and their impact on fun in games. After a brief discussion of "Candy Land" and "Ricochet Robots," we launched into a nice game of "Citadels."

ACM

The student chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) has close ties to the gaming initiatives at SPSU.

On October 2, 2008, the ACM hosted a talk entitled "Neo-Shamans: Computing as Indistinguishable from Magic." Here is a WMV video of this talk (100Mb).

Other Groups

Other community groups related to gaming and computing are also being formed. Please check back for more information, including information on the upcoming group focused on game servers led by Roger Butlerwe.
