Southern Polytechnic State University is happy to be a host site for the Georgia Fall Game Jam 2010. The School of Computing and Software Engineering welcomes you to join us for this fun and exciting event! This is one of many activities sponsored by the games.spsu.edu group at SPSU.
Prizes will be awarded and participants will be eligible for a $2000 prize sponsored by 3DVIA, swag from NVIDIA and free conference passes to attend SIEGE 2010 (in Oct in Atlanta).
Game jams foster innovation and experimentation. If you have ever wanted to make a game, be a part of a team, go outside of your usual working method, then a game jam is for you. A game jam is 48 hours of fun, creativity, and chaos! People self-form into teams and develop a game from scratch in 48 hours. Artists and programmers collaborate together, share ideas, and have a great time. We’ll start at 5:00PM Friday, Sept. 10, and go through 5:00PM Sunday, Sept. 12.
Everyone meets on Friday, Sept 10 in J-202 at SPSU. The organizers will then share the constraints and rules for the game jam. Everyone will have 15 minutes to come up with a pitch and then share it with the group. Teams will then be formed; no one leaves until everyone is a part of a team. Teams are free to use the space during the 48 hours (you can sleep and come and go as you’d like). Each team will have until 4:00PM on Sunday, September 20th to create their game. The local jurors will then go around and play all the games and at 4:00pm, each team will present their game to all participants.
If you need to arrive late or leave early, that's OK. You can also come and go as you need during the weekend, though we will keep the space open for the full 48 hours.
Prizes and raffle items will be given away from our sponsors, NVIDIA and 3DVIA.
All finished games will be archived onto the Game Jam website for all to play.
Anyone 18 years and older can participate in a game jam: experienced professionals, students, and wannabes. Artists, programmers, and generally creative people are needed. Teams will be formed on site.
SPSU will make computer labs and work (and crash) space available for participants all weekend. You are welcome to bring your own rig, but our computer labs will have the following:
We also have numerous tablets for graphic artists to use.
The rules of the game jam preclude you from using pre-made content
(this includes program code, audio, graphics, models, etc.) unless it was
publicly available at least a month prior to the event. The idea is that we
want to see what people can create within the 48 hours. If you have any
questions about the appropriateness of content/code, please email
prior to the
jam.
Of course, you can also use this weekend to work on your game projects in a fun, friendly atmosphere and knock out the majority of your project work for the semester all in one weekend! We encourage digital and non-digital game creation, so you don't have to have extensive programming experience. We're specifically looking for artists and audio folks to contribute content for programmers!
We will also have:
Additionally, there are many local eateries and many that deliver to SPSU campus, and we provide a list of these restaurants.
To register, send your name and other contact info (email, phone#, address, etc.) to Jon Preston (jpreston [at] spsu [dot] edu) with the subject “Game Jam Registration”. Registration is $25 payable early or at the door. Since space is limited, participants are accepted first-come-first-served when registration fee is paid.
Participants will get food, snacks, and other swag compliments of our sponsors. Prizes will also be awarded.
Many students will win free passes to the SIEGE conference (held in Atlanta during the first weekend in Oct), which has a value of $35+, so it's definitely worth it to attend this jam and win free entry into SIEGE.
We'll also showcase the games developed during this jam during the SIEGE conference, so you'll have a chance to get your work out in front of local games industry folks and make a strong impression of your skills to them!
